Train Types
With Interrail you can take almost all trains within Europe. Sometimes they need an additional reservation but this is actually good as it helps you Save on train travel. But most of the time you can just hop on and enjoy the ride. It is good to know the different train types. So that you can easily recognize the train you want to take, what you can expect and where it goes to.
The Regional Train
The Regional (RE) Train is a slow train that travels a short distance to/from/within a large city. Usually this train stops at every single train station along the route. Other names for these trains are; stop-train (ST), suburban (SUB). With an Interrail ticket you can board any of these trains as they do not require any reservation at all.
The InterCity Train
The InterCity (IC) Train is a fast train that travels a large distance to/from bigger cities. Usually this train stops only at major train stations along the route. Other names for these trains are; express (EXP), fast-train (FT), international (INT), regional express (RE). The Night Train
The Night (NT) Train is a slow train that travels a large distance to/from bigger cities. Usually this train stops only at major train stations along the route. Other names for these trains are; euronight (EN), international (INT), nightjet (NJ). With an Interrail ticket you can board any of these trains but they always require a additional reservation. The High-Speed Train
The High-Speed (IC) Train is a fast train that travels a large distance to/from bigger cities. Usually this train stops only at major train stations along the route. Other names for these trains are; AVE, Eurostar, ICE, TGV etc. With an Interrail ticket you can board any of these trains but they always require a additional reservation.
